Venice 42 Years Later

When we first visited Venice as an engaged but unmarried couple in 1969 we were shooed away from a hotel near the Rialto Bridge because our last names on our passports weren't the same. We visited 42 years later a few weeks ago. Well times (and prices!!) have changed but Venice hasn't.

Gondoliers, musty canals, faded muted colored walls and a unique worldly charm still clothe this magical fairytale city.

Etched permanently in our mind and in our hearts is a magical gondola ride at dusk with an opera singer's haunting voice and soft mandolin strings echoing off the canal walls.

We were able to tour Saint Marks Square (the crowds!) and the Doges Palace (the grandeur!) just before the Pope's visit the next day closed the city's central core and the Grand Canal like a trapdoor. Minor flooding also closed some buildings for a few hours.

Did the sins of our earlier visit disqualify us from VIP access to the Square? the Pope?

Not to worry, we simply strolled along the narrow medieval lanes and over cute bridges almost aimlessly to sip cafe Americano, lick gelato and people watch. Anna loves to shop and David doesn't but this time David was on a mission to gather and photograph Venetian Carnival masks and to capture gondolas and gondoliers with his Canon 7D.

A year ago wandering the narrow lanes in Barcelona, we found a shop laden with Venetian masks and David's photograph of a window display of masks rekindled a Venetian love affair (or our love affair in Venice?).

Could Venice's Carnival festival in February be our next Venetian photo op or will close-ups of their masks do?

Venice is back on our bucket list and we will return to the Venice of our past and our present (already booked!!) and before it sinks into oblivion. Will the engineers build the protective flood gates in time?  We hope so.
